New Horizons
Women’s work was celebrated with art, songs, stories, and food during a special reception on Saturday afternoon. People gathered at the Women’s Place Resource Center in Annapolis Royal in recognition of International Women’s Day.
Wanda Finnegan Joudrey opened the celebration with traditional Mi’kmaw songs, drumming and music. The art and crafts displays featured local artists including quillwork by Marlene Joudrey and paintings by Giselle Beauchamp. While guests mingled and nibbled around her, Rae Bailey made keepsake multi-cultural bracelets to give away.
Gregg Kerr, MP for West Nova, brought good news to this year’s celebration. The Women’s Place will receive $23,000 under the New Horizons program to host a series of workshops across the center’s catchment area. These workshops will raise awareness about elder abuse.
“We are pleased that the federal government through the New Horizons program continues to support the Women’s Place to provide programs for senior women,” said Della Longmire, executive director. This project will provide workshops in five communities to increase the awareness of elder abuse, its signs and symptoms.”
